...first, try to consider "why" the rats like your back yard...? Is there a food source back there...? uncovered trash cans...?
They are looking for their next meal... Now to the fun part... Go to the Home Depot or your favorite hardware store and get some "big" glue-traps... set them out where you think the "rats" will show up (corners, hiding places etc) and in the morning... see what you've "stuck" to the glue... Oh, a "dab" of peanut butter in the center of the trap is a "tasty" treat for the "rat"...(be careful...some of those glue traps are so sticky that you can catch a truck)...

What is attracting the rats? Do you have high grass and weeds? Do you have a lot of rotting food laying around in the backyard?
Most people don't have a rat problem in their yards unless something is drawing the rats in.

A big cat! Seriously though, poison is the most effective way. Make sure there are no food scraps left around - what rats can get into is amazing too. They ccan chew through wiring and all sorts. Horrid things. Good luck.

It would probably be a good idea to figure out why you have the rats in the first place. The rats are probably inside your home and have been attracted by open food containers or open garbage cans

Rat poison is the only thing that has ever worked for me. My neighborhood was infested by a cemetary doing cleaning, and guess where they moved to. You really need to find out what is drawing them.

I don't know how you could get rid of them, but I do know that a natural way to keep them away would be to grow mint around the borders of your yard...a cat would also help.

cat, snake, monitor lizard, dog, i have an wild owl around my neighborhood-takes care of rodents...ratpoison is no good because it endangers you/ your pets and it will only kill the adult rats while animals can uproot entire nests.
