The cargo plane travelling at 195 mph,starts at noon and by the time the jet takes off at 2 PM,it has already travelled a distance of
195*2=390 miles
The relative speed between the two planes is
400-195 or 205 miles per hour
Therefore after it starts,the jet plane will overtake the cargo plane in (390/205) or 78/41 hrs
78/41 hrs
=1 37/41 hrs
=1 hr 54 minutes 9 seconds
Therefore,the jet plane overtakes the cargo plane at
2 pm+1 hr 54 min 9 sec
=3-54'09" pm

for 2 hrs the cargo plane travels a distance = 2(195) = 390 miles
(400 - 195) t = 390
t = 390 / 205 = 1.9024 hours
time to overtake = 2 + 1.9024 = 3.9024 hours
time: 3 : 54 : 09

Ok, the distance the cargo plane has gone for t in hours is

d_c = 195 * t

The distance the jet has gone for t in hours is

d_j = 400(t - 2) if t greater than 2, 0 otherwise.

setting the two distances as equal gives

195t = 400t - 800.

Therefore 205t = 800.

t = 800/205 hours... multiply by 60 to get minutes gives

234 minutes.

Hope this helps

3:54 PM
jet will catch cargo plane at 760. 976 miles.
400x - 195x = 195*2
205x = 390
x = 390/205
x = 1.9024 hours flying time for jet to catch cargo plane
.9024 * 60 = 54 minutes
1' 54"
2PM + 1'54" = 3:54PM
2PM + 1.9024 = 3.9024 PM 60*.9024= 54 minutes

check problem

400 * 1.9024=760.976miles
195 * (1.9024 + 2) = 760.976miles

v=d/t
400t=195t+390
205t=390
t=1.902hrs
which is equivalent to1 hr and 54min.
so the jet will overtake the cargo at around 3:54
