and how old are you? If you don't want to get specific, just say over or under 21.

Definitely over 21 here...yikes!

I'm going to look at this from a different angle first. We can't blame a band for the actions some have taken against others - a band can't take a life. The bands that may have provided some sort of inspiration in some aspects of the lives of the shooters didn't pull the triggers at Columbine and other similar incidents - the shooters themselves did. Them and them alone.

At some point we need to take responsibility for our own actions - for the bad, but also for the good. While I'll be right up there with everyone else saying that music is extremely powerful force in the lives of some of us, and has probably gotten many of us through some pretty rough times, it's not what ultimately makes the decision whether or not to end your own life. You only have to look as far as a mirror to see who's responsible for that making that choice.

The last time I saw 21, I was knee deep into a bottle of Jack Daniels. I woke up the next morning and remembered that I was indeed way past 21 and should never do anything that stupid again.... and this time I mean it.

Back to the question at hand, I can see where the music might help you through a rocky situation by providing insight to a problem, or by just being uplifiting, but as far as saving a life? I don't think so. You may be inspired, but it's your own self-will and determination that gives you the ability to get up and move along.

.... unless of course you're 13 and MCR and PATD and FOB and CIA and KGB and FBI have all those really "hot boys" and then it can definitely save your life.

Long live three lettered abreviation bands.

This is really a loaded question...... I can say yes and no, when you have this band who expresses something in you, that you were previously unable to express, then yes the music can help you through you issue or issues, but would I base my life around this band or bands no. I can say that I have this feeling because of how music made me feel prior while I was younger than 21 (14 to be exact), I'm 26 now and I haven't had a band touch me this way since, so maybe it was just an age thing, however music is a huge part of my life, so maybe not....

I need to clarify MCR was NOT the band that had this influence on me.....(obviously with the age thing, but I want it on record)

I am 21 and sure, I believe a band can save your life. Maybe not physcially, but if a person is in a state of depression, I can totally understand how the words of someone who you admire can save you from getting even deeper or could even take you out. Sure you don't know them and they are indirectly helping you, but I still think there is some organic connection between the words we hear in songs and our emotions.

WITH THAT SAID...I still get annoyed when every My Chemical Romance fan says they saved their life. I just find it hard to believe that THAT MANY people were just so low before they found the band.

Under 21. I do believe a band can save my life from boredom and from the music that sounds always the same.

I'm twenty, not quite twenty-one and I definitely believe that a band can save your life. Whether it's something in the lyrics that make you think and make you debate about what all feels wrong with you and with whatever situation you're in...or even if it's something for you to focus on.

I've been suicidal more than a few times and even while I was working through them and an attempt to take my own life, I always found myself becoming focused on a band. Whether I liked them or I was starting TO like them.

But I agree with others that it all depends on the person and how they deal with things.

Absolutely! These last couple of years for me have been really tough and if it wasn't for my music, I wouldn't be here right now. Like luvnrckts said music definitely helps kids (especially me) explain what/how they are feeling. When my parents split up, I couldn't even stand to be in the same room as my dad, and one day he asked me why and instead of answering him, I made him a cd. Music just is a form of expression and a lot of times it is a great way to say what you mean because when you find bands that write about similar situations, it is easier to relate and cope and explain things. Like when my parents split, I swear I listened to "Stay together for the kids" (blink-182) every day at least 10 times. Its just nice to know that someone else knows how you feel and that they put their opinions in a form you can enjoy.

oh yeah- under 21

over 21. the music a band or artist makes can definetely save a life. for the good part of my teens years and more around 19-22 i was totally saved by the music of one particular band. the lyrics was so amazingly written and really fit in with what i was feeling. i would listen and get lost within the music and then write myself. it was therapy for me.

i believe music really is a important way of life and can help you express any emotion or opinion about any subject. its the beatles said in all you need is love- theres nothing you can sing that cant be sung.

over 21. Tricky question. It's not the band but their art and perspective which I think is a cosmic sort of thing they are privvy to and materialize into sounds. The chord given sound by the band is a chord that is good for you and is straight from the cosmos... So yes, in a sense a band can save your life as a conduit of good energy that you need at the time of your crisis/situation from the universe.

A couple of examples. At a Marilyn Manson concert, I overheard a young woman telling someone that Marilyn had changed her life because she realized it was ok to be herself and not follow the crowd. She wasn't dressed as a Manson wannabe. Just another young woman in the crowd, but it stuck in me.

Bobby Gaylor's spoken word "Suicide" saved countless lives. Very cleverly written, and it began as a letter he left for a friend who was determined to die despite all pleas from family and friend how much they'd miss him. Bobby starts the song by acting as if "so what?" then turns it on its head by telling us what WE will miss if we kill ourselves. Made me shiver the first time I heard it all the way through, uncensored.

In a few more years, I hope to reach 21 for the third time.
