Well I have this PC which i use rarely at home with p4 1.7 Ghz processor, asrock p4vm800 board,w/o graphic card, 256 of RAM & XP SP2 OS. Is it time for me to upgrade or this is just enough? Can this work out with some gaming like NBA live or CS source?

upgrade!
You have to find the memory size exactly and do not buy high density, it is rarely used and only in new computers mostly. depends on your expansion slots too. I assume you only have PCI, go buy a 256MB PCI graphics card. ATi is best. Upgrade to about 1.5 to 2GB of memory.
With a processor that strong you shouldn't have anything less that 512MB memory! And XP recommends 256 because it uses so much. Processor is good, 2GB of memory is recommended, upgrade graphics to 256MB PCI (WATCH OUT FOR PCI-E) That means PCI-Express and that is only used on newer models, it is a longer block slot, that can be confused with the super old slots called ISA. The games? No they will be choppy and annoying! Upgrade and they will run smooooth! I build and repair and upgrade computers professionally and have been for 10 years. Use what I recommend and you won't be disappointed! I promise!
I however cannot promise it will be cheap.
You could also upgrade the CPU too, but the means finding out what socket your motherboard is... and if you could I would upgrade to P4-HT (Hyper Threading Technology) allows the computer to do more than one process at a time. Kind of like your core 2 duo processors now, only they're faster!

Iv would say it's time to upgrade, but it is barely enough. 512 is still standard for RAM but with Dell and Gateway now offering all their PCs with 1 gig of RAM, 512 will soon be the laughing stock of your inner circle of co-workers and/or friends. Also, with games these days you are pretty much required to have a video card with at least 128mb of vram. So upgrade soon!

It would work but it would be lagging. You might want to add some more RAM and a good video card.

I have CS running on a 1.83 ghz computer with 768 mb of ram... have a 256mb video card... its pretty good but load up slow.

You could put some zest to it by increasing RAM to at least 512mb then putting a real graphics card. Even a $60 card can put some excitement to that old PC.

I wouldn't use it for gaming.. While the processor would squeak by, the lack of add on 3d acceleration and low memory would piss you off mid game...even with your graphics quality set to LOW.
