You first need to simplify the equation by dividing both sides by 4.

(4y^2) / 4 = 200 / 4

Then the equation is simplified to

y^2 = 50

which is equivalent to saying

y * y = 50

Here is the small glitch. There is no whole number when multiplied by itself gives 50. The closest you can get is 7 (7^7= 49).

If you are looking for non-whole numbers,

y = (50)^(1/2)
y = 7.07 (to 2 decimal places)

4y^2=200
So you find y^2 by dividing the equation by 4.
You end up with y^2=50.
Then to find y take the square root of 50 which is 7.07 (3 s.f.)

y ² = 50
y = √ 50
y = ± 5 √2

divide both sides by 4, you get:

y^2 = 50

get the square root:

y= 50^0.5 = (25*2)^0.5

ans: y = 5*2^0.5 or -5*2^0.5 (sorry, don't know how else to type the square root sign, but this is just the same)

since roots can be positive or negative.

hope this helps
