I avoid my reflection at all costs! I try never to look closely at a mirror either except when I need to put in contacts.
I'm not sure why this is the behavior for most of us in the family. We practically shun mirrors. I would imagine it's because there's not an egotistical person in our family; we look like the Irish/Native North American mixture that we are. Besides, I doubt there were many mirrors in households back in Ireland and certainly not among the Illinis. Maybe we've never gotten used to it. Maybe it's some superstition though I don't know what that would be.
We're rather an eccentric bunch I suppose. Just mark that up as one of our shared oddities.
EDIT: I notice mention of avoidance as an indication of low self-esteem, but I don't believe that's the case for us. We're not outgoing people, but we're not huddled in misery either. I think that appearance truly isn't important to us. Only a few in the family wear makeup, and it's a rare one who fusses with her tresses much. For the fellows, it's a simple haircut, mostly at home, with no extras such as hairspray, mousse, styling gel and such. Even when I was a teenager, I didn't want to go that route. Again, I suppose we must seem odd to many people, not being vain about looks even when several of my cousins are very good-looking; there's no egotistical behavior at all. Oh well...
That leaves all of the windows and mirrors for those who like gazing upon themselves. To each his or her own, as they say.

Yeah, sure. It's a habit I think we all have, to maintain an idea on how we're presenting ourselves. And maybe to see how we look in someone's mirror other than our own.
