1 mb=1000 kb, although strictly speaking
1mb = 1024 kb

what your message means is that the connection is capable of handling a download of 12, 000 kb a second. It does not mean that you always receive that speed as this depends on other factors such as how many people are sharing your connection to the server and how far you are from the phone exchange..

What is your internet provider and what do they give you as your provided connection speed?
For instance, I have AT&T DSL service at 3MBPS. I download at around 300KB/s it depends on the rate of the server that you are connected to, and your rate as well.
For example, limewire, when you are downloading a shared file... first you are connected at 12mbps right, and you are downloading from a modem on the other end, regardless of your speed you still download quite slow, probably only as high as 10kb/s thats it. However, what is great if you get more hosts, and they have faster speeds you can go as high as 3-5mb/s.

12mb/s will depend on your hosts server, and your computer as well. In general 12MB/s means you will download at a rate of 1,171.875KB/s if your connection is pure!
All I can say is... count on lower speeds, that speed there is only just above 1MB/s. you will probably have an average download time of 2 hours for a full 700MB movie.
Go to yahoo search and type in internet speed test. There you will be able to test the download rate of your connection. Use the CNet test, it's fairly simple.
Good Luck!

This is probably the speed of your wireless connection. It is not very fast, but still generally faster than the actual internet connection. With better signal you would get 54 Mbps.

It means that you have a speed of 12 megabytes per second which is good. It denoted the overall speed you can have for uploading and downloading.Generally, upto 70% is dedicated for downloading and 30% for uplading because we do more of downloading and less of downloading.

It means that you are connected at 12 Megabytes per second, that you are downloading that many megabytes per second, which is very high speed in my opinion, but who knows if your internet speed is really running at that rate.

I believe it means the speed of bites coming. It says 12 million bites per second. K represent a thousand, hence it will say 12,000 kbps. I am not very sure.
