Compared to what?
Ive been a system admin for internet sites for as long as its been internet. Ive had alot of involvement in this subject long before there were even official sites for it.
One answer that is kindof fun is like this:
Someone tells you "You dont know if they are really young, or really blonde, or really have those stats, or really even female"
Answer back "Oh yeah? Have you been to a bar recently?"
Most of the people who put down online dating consider bars or dance clubs to be the mostly likely alternative. But give them a hard time about not being able to really chat with the person in such a place and then taking them home. Thats when they start taking stuff off you find out that they arent really young, arent really blonde, dont really have those stats, and maybe arent even female.
Sure people can fake things online. But over a period of time you tend to really get to know the person. Its not infallable but its not a total failure either, and real-world meetings arent always perfect either.
------ subnote -------
On the other hand.....
MEETING them has many hazards. People in some countries looking for mates in another just to change citizenship. People in some countries trying to get you there because the laws there arent a problem for things like kidnapping. Or just the scam lately of getting a free plane ticket across country by pretending to be a cute young girl and getting some guy in that city to send them a ticket. Be VERY careful about how and where you finally meet someone.

It's very safe with common sense, and it can truly be wonderful. I met my husband through match.com. We've been married a year and a half and every day I thank God for a man as kind hearted and loving as him!!! We never would have found each other w/o the internet because we lived over 400 miles away when we met. He put in a search asking for specific qualities in a girl (which I had), and I came up as his #1 match. It has been amazing!
All you have to do is meet the guy in a public place like a restaurant, coffee house, park, etc. Best to meet for a short term thing like coffee or a drink than dinner, because that way if there's no connection you can bail immediately and not waste much time. I met a lot of guys through dating online because I lived out in the suburbs in family land and was the only single person I knew. Of course some guys are dogs only out for one thing, but it's easy to weed them out, as they usually come across as pretty brainless in their responses. I met lots of nice people and it can be a lot of fun.
Oh, my hubby's best friend also met his wife online. They're awesome together too!! Something like 12-20% of all marriages that happen today are from people meeting online.

Safe in the sense that you're apart. Remember not all said could be done and vice versa. Long distance relationship won't last. You must find time to see each other in person.

It's very safe if it stays on-line. How safe is it when you meet the person face to face? Just use your common sense on line or offline and don't get paranoid. Good luck

not atall ... my cousin got in a relationship through online dating thing and also got married to her ... and still regretting big time ... but there can be cases that are opposite ... whatever it is make sure you first go through everything that you would have gone through if you would have met that person normally(i mean not through internet) ... to see if he's compatible with your own self ! ... good luck

I'm sure it has worked out for some, but I have to think that is pretty rare.
I don't believe it's safe at all.
Just date the "old fashioned" way.

I've done it.
My sister has done it TWICE.
And both times we had great relationships.
Go for it, but be careful, perhaps take someone with you the first or first few times.
