Approx sixty years ago young people discovered the guitar. Big band swing, all kinds of Jazz, Crooners, etc, were swept away by guitar and drums and the world of popular music has been dominated ever since by minor variations on the theme with the occasional singer/songwriter plus piano.
Is there any chance we will ever see a new music type and a turn away from the guitar?

Any musical instrument is like an extension of your soul, so unless someone invents something as aesthetically pleasing, beautiful and great sounding as a guitar, which people like to hold and play with more than a guitar, which I find highly unlikely, the answer is no.

The guitar is much older than sixty years.

To the guy below: The electric guitar received a cold welcome from music purists as well. Complaining about drum machines is a waste of time. Devin Townsend, a multi-instrumentalist and guitar virtuoso, used a drum machine on his latest album and was thusly able to engineer the entire thing by himself. I'd have a hard time calling him "soulless."

hey its survived the introduction of electro pop, hardcore, trance and any other kind of non guitar music even than bastard pete waterman couldnt make it obsolete
but theres always a new guitar trend to combat the shite
that seems to be the latest music scene
like the revival of the indie scene in the early nineties as rave was becoming big and now wether you like it or not the emo scene is the new big thing and its all guitar music
as long as theres music theres always gonna be an axe

We already have. Check out all the experimental electronic bands from the 70's; Kraftwerk, Harmonia, FM, Jean Michel Jarre, Tim Blake, Patrick Vian, Synergy, Tomita, Klaus Schulze, to name just a few.

Eventually it will lose its popularity, but I'm sure there will always be a small population of music lovers who will still play it. Everybody hear seems to think that guitar is the only instrument out there. Really, you can play any style of music with any instrument.

No, why should they? Guitars in one form or another have been around for well over a thousand years, and have contributed to the betterment of many forms of music.

No, I don't see that happening.

But I do think that the guitar will become less and less important. Most guitarists these days barely have a clue what they're doing!

I think guitars are way overused in popular music but they're not going to go away anytime soon.
