A lot of doctors will refuse to do elective c-sections as the risks to mother and baby are greater than by vaginal births.

With a c-section, as with any surgery, there is risk of bleeding, infection, injury to the bowel and/or bladder and/or baby.

There are plenty of options for pain medications for vaginal births and its not as scary as you might imagine. What you should really do is find a doctor who will explain your options/ risks and benfits - and make sure you are making an informed decision.

But yes, a doctor can refuse to do a c-section that is not necessary. You would just have to find a doctor that will.

Good luck with whatever decision you make, and congratulations on your baby!

Why oh Why would you rather have a c-section? It is major surgery and comes with substantial risk. Not only is a vaginal birth healthier for mom and baby, recovery is sooooo much faster. Get educated about the birth process and a lot of your fears will be alleviated. There are lots of ways to deal with the "pain" of childbirth if that is what you are afraid of.

I wanted a vaginal birth but ended up with a c-section - I was in pain for about 4 weeks, and the nerve pain is still recurring after 15 weeks. It is so hard to care for your child when you can barely move, and because of the catheter during peeing is really hard for about 1 week after. I think that you are insane for wanting to have a c-section - and you would be missing out on an important part of becoming a mother. Didn't you know when you got pregnant how it was going to come out? If you are so scared, why did you do it?

I personally feel like I was robbed. I went through 24 hours of labor (completely UN-MEDICATED)- 9 pushing, and I needed a c-section because my son did not turn and was stuck behind my pubic bone. I grieve that I did not get to experience birth as God intended.

Trust me natural childbirth is best. I had a c-section and was in severe pain for weeks afterward. I had a real hard time dealing with it cause I felt like I coun't take care of my baby like I should have. All my friends that had natural childbirths said they were fine within hours of giving birth, could walk around and stand up no problem. When you have a c section you lay in bed the first 2 days and on the third they try to get you to walk around a little, but you have to be helped out of bed and on pain killers. The incision site will still hurt and be tender months after when touched. Trust me the vagina was made for child birth.

That's like me walking in and asking for a routine triple bypass when I don't even need one, you know? I went through the same thing though. BUT rest assured, your fears are of the pain it's going to cause, if you are in excruciating amounts of pain that no drugs will fix, or if it takes way too long with no progress, something obviously is wrong and they will opt for a c section anyway.

you can opt out for NO forcepts and NO vacuum, as this is looked down upon by pediatricians anyway, and that usually will leave them with no choice. I opted for pain relief but no narcotics, so nothing worked for my pain and my pelvis was too small to actually vaginally birth a baby, so I ended up with a c section... after 18 hours of labor and 3 of them pushing with the worst pain I have ever felt.

And all of this about c sections hurting is not normal. you have plenty of pain meds afterwards that totally nix the pain. And if it doesn't you tell them and they give you something else. Trust me a c section is BLISS. And the scar is hardly noticeable and I just had one last December and am having one again this December. Basically it is just a longer healing time you have to take it easy. It doesn't effect taking care of your baby at all either.

I delivered naturally, and left the hospital walking, holding the baby carrier... and my son was 10lbs 7oz! It really is better to do it naturally, I know its scary, but you can get an epidural to ease the pain, if thats what youre afraid of. Dont you think you might feel as if you "missed out" on the whole birth experience if you opt to have a c-section? Anyway, I think it would probably depend on the doctor, so you would have to talk it over with him/her.

Csections are much worse than vaginal birth. Yes giving birth hurts but only for a while, csections hurt for 3 weeks or more while you are recovering. If you are scared of the pain ask your doctor about pain relief options. There are many from epidural to demerol you can even get ntrous oxide. I'm sure you and your doctor can find a good option.

You should be able to choose whatever birth you want without being discriminated against. However, you may find that people, not just your doctor will judge you for not trying a vaginal birth. Its socially ok to have a c-section for breech or placenta previa or similar but not just out of choice so be prepared for comments. You may want to lie and make up something why you had a c-section. Why are you scared? Billions of people have had vaginal deliveries before and you will be in a hospital with professional people around you. Make sure you look into it first before making any decisions ok.

C-Sections are major surgery, and yes a doctor can refuse to do one without a good medical reason.

yes they can refuse becasue a c-section is like surgery and there is way more risk of complication during delivery and after when you are healing.

I understand being scared but I'd be more scared of a c-section myself.

many doctors only want to do a c-section if absolutely necessary.

You would be better off pushing the baby out your self, c-sections hurt like hell for a few weeks after.
But no a doctor can't make you not have one.
