I think people have been fascinated by pirates throughout cinematic history. People generally don't see them quite as bad guys because we, too, have a history: Moviegoers support the underdog, whether they are pirates, Butch & Sundance, Bonnie & Clyde, or others we really shouldn't be cheering for. So, it's not just "these days"

Here are some examples, ranging from the Thirties to the present (not in chronological order):
Captain Blood
Adventures of Captain Fabian
Against All Flags
The Black Pirate
The Crimson Pirate
Swashbuckler (one of my favorites, ranking just under POTC films)
Yellowbeard
Pirates
The Black Swan
Pirates of Penzance (musical though not faithful to the original)
The Pirate Movie (an awful musical comedy based on Pirates of Penzance)
Blackbeard's Ghost
Blackbeard the Pirate
The Boy and the Pirates
Last of the Buccaneers
Long John Silver
Magic Island
The Master of Ballantrae
The Buccaneer (filmed twice)
Captain Kidd
The King's Pirate
The Golden Hawk
Hook (wicked pirate)
The Ice Pirates (science fiction about pirates in space!)
Captain Kidd and the Slave Girl
Caribbean
Frenchman's Creek
The Island (1980) (verrrrrrrrrry wicked pirates reminiscent of The Others on "Lost" in some ways)
The Pirate (musical)
Port Sinister
Prince of Pirates
Cuthhroat Island
The Princess Bride
Queen of the Pirates
The Devil-Ship Pirates
Pirate of the Black Hawk
Rage of the Buccaneers
Raiders of the Seven Seas
Pirates of the Plains (time traveling pirates!)
Double Crossbones
Shipwrecked
The Spanish Main
Treasure Island (several versions)
Return to Treasure Island (a film and a miniseries)
Sea Devils
Yankee Buccaneer
The Sea Hawk
Peter Pan (animated and live action)
Fortunes of Captain Blood
Morgan the Pirate
Pirates of the Seven Seas
Pirates of Tortuga
The Pirates of Tripoli
Muppet Treasure Island (Yep! Even the Muppets get into the piratical mood!)
Nate and Hayes
A High Wind in Jamaica (The pirates are a bit fiercer here.)
The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (of course)

Pirates are not/were not good people. They ravaged ships and killed innocents, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies make pirates out to be saints by making them the protagonists.
