Mg + 2HCl + H2O >>>> MgCl2 + H2 (gas)

Note: water does not take part in the reaction other than as a solvent. In water, the MgCl2 will be dissolved as Mg+2 and Cl- ions.

Ok, I'm not sure that I have enough information to answer your question. Are you being asked to come up with an equation wherein a magnesium compound reacts with HCl to give water? If so, this is one possibiltiy:

Mg(OH)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) -------------> MgCl2 (s) + 2H2O (l)

I'm not sure if that is what you were looking for or not. Anyway, magnesium hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to give magnesium chloride and water. I hope that helped.
