yeah, it could be physically but verbally is just as bad. i heard this guy at a restaurant telling his wife that she was embarrassment to him due to her weight and looks. she just stared off and ignored him. i had never seen a person be talked to this way before by another mate.

I finally left my abusive husband in March. Verbal abuse falls into the definition of domestic abuse, and it is just as bad, if not worse. That is how I handled it. And that was after his repeated scoffs at counseling and years of denial that anything was wrong.

If it was me, I'd be insulting back because that's how i am, however there are many who do just ignore it and let it eat away at them, causing all sorts of emotional problems. Its even worse if there are children involved due to inferiority issues and copying the behaviour in their own relationships.
the only things I know of that one can do are to get counselling for themselves and their partners and try and salvage the relationship or to leave.

I would leave. There is never a good reason to abuse another person and I would refuse to stand it. Unfortunately many women (and some men) are stuck in such relationships do to poor finances and lack of job and contacts, even because of duty to children to have a parental figure to provide for them.

You DON'T "handle" an abusive mate - they handle YOU - and not very well, either. Ignoring abuse does NOT make it stop - it usually makes it WORSE, because the abuser THRIVES off the REACTION. They WILL harass until they get REACTION.

I'm glad I did not hear that guy say that - I know I would have told him how embarrassing he was because he acts like a horses as* !!!! I would LOVE a guy like that to even TRY and come back on me!!

you don't handle an abusive mate but leave them. she may well look that way because there is no one there to make her feel better about herself. Verbal abuse can easily lead to physical abuse but both are bad.

If the one being abused is smart they leave the relationship/marriage. Verbal/emotional abuse tends to turn into physical abuse especially if alcohol is involved.

I would never deal with a man like that, nor would I marry a verbally or abusive man like that.

If she is smart she will leave him ASAP. Her self-esteem is probably zero though, and that makes it hard for her to face the future alone. If someone doesn't believe in themselves it is very easy for someone to bully them. It isn't right though and if I had been there with you I would have told the woman she was too good for the likes of him.

I had a husband like that.....I took it for a awhile, mainly because I had very low self-esteem. Even though his words hurt me deeply, , in a way, I secretly agreed with him. One day I stopped listening to him and started to listen to my family and friends....At that point ,I started to give back what I was getting. For every "flaw" of mine he pointed out I showed him 2 of his own.(which, of course, made things worse..LOL) Eventually, I tired of him and his abuse and I left.
