Silly GreatNeck!!!!!You live there and don't know the difference between an island and a peninsula????? roflmao. Too funny. Anyway, got that out of my system. (sorry) Now back to the Q&A. Clearwater and St. Pete are on a peninsula. An island is land surrounded by water. To the north is land, no water, which makes it a peninsula.(GreatNeck, I learned that at Lois Elementary in Tampa)

It is a natural Peninsula. But it is very nearly an island because Lakes, marshes and canals leave only one unbroken land bridge between the peninsula and the mainland: A sliver of land between Lake Tarpon and Salt Lake well north of Clearwater. Lake Tarpon empties into a canal that runs to the the bay, Salt Lake empties into marshes and bayous that run to the gulf.
