I am trying to get a kind of old computer (hp compaq d530 cmt) to run again after sitting around for a while, but when ever I plug in the power cord in the back and go to turn it on, it just starts flashing the red light on the computer and starts making an annoying beeping sound. Any Ideas what this could mean, HP's website didn't offer any help!

Most of the time, the power supply can go bad on older model PC desktops. Not only that, if the PC desktop is not used in a while, dust that can contain metallic particles can damage hardware components when the machine is turned on and electrical currents run through the motherboard. First, replace the power supply. If the power supply model is unavailable, try to get a power supply similar in output or just above, but not below. If the power supply does not resolve the issue, the motherboard may be damaged. Best Buy has a good repair center available a qualifying locations. If you live near a Fry's Electronics store, I would recommend their repair center.

First unplug the computer, then remove the casing so you can access the motherboard and find the battery stored on it, should look like a watch battery, and remove it.

I usually recommend waiting a couple minutes, and then put the battery back in place and put the casing back on.

Finally, plug the computer back in and start it up, hopefully at that point, the BIOS(The built in program on that board that tells your computer how to start up) should reset to factory settings, and you shouldn't get that beep again, otherwise your computer has some various components dead.

Count the annoying beeps, how many, long short etc.

Those beeps tell you whats wrong.

Search the HP site, I am willing to bet, even if it's in the archives, that it has a manual which will decipher the beeps for you.

it means your hard drive lost its sectors and you can either reformat or put in a new hard drive.
