That's one.
But, in a larger sense, the root of all evil is the pathological 'love' (or need to have) -any- thing. When any one thing becomes so over-riding in your life that it begins to crowd out all else, you is heading for some -very- deep s.h.i.t.

The love of money, not having money, is the root of all evil. From close experience i can tell you it´s quite accurate. IMHO money, as many things that come along with it, is a resonsibility, and you have to be prepared to face it. This is especially true when people are missing a little education and suddenly find themselves with more money than they can handle. They start thinking they can do whatever they want, money is going to get them out of trouble (if any). They start acting and feeling superior to family, friends, the law, even God. Suddenly they feel they are God, money is there to show the world.
So, i´d say, yes, it can be.

What I think it means will be different from the other answers. I see money as a symbol, much like any other symbol in this world, but it invokes within the mind in our personality a function, or could be called a sub-aspect of our minds division. All objectives are merely symbols because they are an imagine thing of our interpretation, they are thing of vibration and can be said to represent aspects of our own consciousness, symbols of a vibration of thought. I believe when people reference to Greed as being the root of all evil, they may not being seeing truly what is being said.

The aspect that money invokes to the untrained mind can exhibit a self ward, lack of appreciation for others, it invokes a consuming principle of an inner disharmony that is projected outwards and causes outward disturbances since there are many who are intoxicated with the symbols meaning, it has enticed them and their baser natures to get it any means necessary, they become like animals in a state of survival of the fittest. In the secular world, or in society it would be the root of all evil because it is the symbol of power that can change a person and consume them as well as having all the means to immerse in negative elements that this power brings.

But again its not really the money that is the fault to this, again the money being a symbol, a object only interacts and entices characteristics or aspects in you that were doormat before the stimulus of this thing, which is paper, cheap cooper touched your hand. An Object can only be stimulus to what abides within you, so it is never the object that is the root of evil, rather the division that lays doormat and operative in your on mind. If you think of money it is really only a receipt to the real substance that is valuable, it is literally from a non-philosophical stand point an allusion/illusion of no value besides what it is "symbolically" acknowledging as the genuine goods of worth, which would be the gold.

Edit - After further thought haha, you could call money a root of sorts in regards to its symbol, because it is a gateway to invoke other defects that exist within us already.

I'm sure there's some suffering in the world that's not attributable to the love of money. I'll say that I think most actions that most people would consider evil are done because of an irrational attachment, which one might call love, to some person, thing or belief.

What an excellent question!

First of all, love (not need, not want, not lust, but love, the giving of oneself) is something we should reserve only for natural entities (i.e., anything/anyone with an identity). Money has no identity. It is an artifice. It is the artifice that connects all artifice, since any artifice can be measured in monetary value. Note also that natural entities cannot be measured in monetary value. For example, can we measure what we lose when a species goes extinct?

Actually _loving_ something of measurable value limits that love to a measurable value, which is a corruption of love, a corruption of the gift of oneself. The corruption of love is most certainly the root of all evil.

Because you become more self sufficient with money, you can walk over people, hurt peolple, control and abuse people, and manipulate and ruin people's livelihood if you use your mind to gain money or love money without any care, and this happens when people have strong minds, skills and spirits to get money at any cost, even destroying people's lives and hopes. Instead of loving people we love their skills to acquire money, thus they are seen as robots or tools to get money and power for the richest. Then it dehumanises life and rejects the rights of mankind and reduces the true love of a person. Therefore this creates evil when it shows ill regard to health, equality and kindness, and it can then be said as a root of all evil as all evil can derive from it like violence, abuse, destruction, ignorance and malice. Because it can be so useful, it is deemed worthy to be evil in order to get it yet everything then falls apart once this evil is inflicted. Few things influence such a large evil as money is so 'useful' but evil can come from oneself without money because of relationships, or health worries.

i don't think that's true. i think that people who are evil generally have a love for money. the type of person who is good is not in it for the money. you could give a good person money, but that would not make them evil.

The idea that our lives are separate is the root of cruelty. It depends on what you mean by evil.
