I have train tracks about two blocks from my house. I've lived in my current place for almost a year and I never notice the sound anymore.

Currently I don't. However my grandma lives near a mountain that always has trains going across it. When I would stay with her it was a signature sound to hear them. I also use to live next to an air force base, so I'd constantly hear planes flying overhead. It didn't take long to get use to it. Now I live by a freeway, so it's not uncommon to hear cars screeching to a stop, or the occasional crash.

I grew up living near train tracks so I don't remember how long it took me since I was a baby, but for my parents it took less than a week. We were so used to them that we didn't even hear them anymore. We literally lived only a few feet away from them.

I live within 500 feet of a railroad track. I love hearing the train, it doesn't bother me, even at night.

Like anything else, TV, whatever you learn to tune it out. Don't dwell on it and let it get power over you.
I don't mind the noise, I'm a block away. What I mind is the diesel soot that accumulates in my life.
