Being a MALE Nurse gives Me certain insights to the Female physiology. From what I have read (web cite address sent to You via Email) at the Mayo Clinic the system is superior to the old 'copper stopper'system of old.

Unsure what the Mirena IUD is (I use a Copper IUD, might be the one you're talking about, but I'm unsure). Technically, sperm can't get past the IUD, but for those that do, the egg can be fertilized, but due to the metallic obstruction in the uterus, wouldn't be viable, and would not even have a heartbeat/brain signals before the body flushes it out with a period.
If you *are* pregnant, or get pregnant on an IUD, go to the ER right away, because it may be a tubal pregnancy (which is common with IUDs, though I haven't had one yet!)
Also, you should be able to check to see if the IUD is in place by feeling for the Cervix to ensure the strings are in place (feels like little pokey/sharp things outside the bump with the hole inside the vaginal area).

Good luck!

As no contraceptive is 100% effective, you can get pregnant on it. Women have.
