LOL. At the time, most priests were not even allowed to read the bible, in case they might come to the 'wrong' ideas. The Catholic Church had a monopoly on the uneducated people, who also could not read the bible to find out if they were being lied to. In a time of widespread poverty, people were giving the money they needed to feed their children to the Catholic Church in an effort to keep themselves and their loved ones out of purgatory.

Martin Luther was a catholic priest who was given the opportunity to study the bible for himself, and found out that these practices (and others) were unscriptural. He didn't just keep the information to himself, but he told many other people, liberating them from the church's grasp.

This lost the church a lot of power over people, and as money hungry power mongers usually are, they were mad.

Martin Luther decried certain practices of the Catholic Church (particularly the sale of indulgences and simony) as heretical; the Pope then declared Martin Luther heretical and excommunicated him.

Martin Luther found practices in the Catholic Church to be evil according to the Bible and he reported this and was excommunicated. Basically according to the church ignorance is bliss.

because he wrote a book that said stuff about all the corruption in the catholic church at the time.

he said that the people dont need to go to church to be forgiven. he said that all you need to do is pray at home.. because at the time, the Catholic priests were giving out penances for ppls sins for a fee.. [which was so wrong and unfair!!]
so Luther wrote his book, and the church excommunicated him.

Wow, the Catholic church was going through some difficult and often, unnesecary things, some of which they brought upon themselves at the time. Personally, I believe it was just to lighten the load.
