I hooked up my dsl , and it shows a network between my pc and the internet. Is this right. it seems nothing is protected on the sharing stuff. Yes, I'm an idiot - but thats not the answer. Please help.

The 'network' is just your computer, your ISP supplied modem / router and the 3 ft piece of Cat-5 between them.

It's normal and nothing to worry about.

YES. Its absolutely normal. It shows that your computer is connected to the remote computer/internet. If you have a firewall, its is protected as well. If you are using windows, goto control panel, double click on windows firewall and check if its turned ON or OFF.
You can also hide the network connection icon if u do not wish to see it. right click on the system bar (the bar the the bottom of the window) slect poperties, click customise, select the local area connection and from the drop-down menu, select always hide and click OK.

do you have internet or not? if you can get on then good. i can show you a screengrab, but you might not have internet. if you have dsl you have a modem. you plug it into the wall. your pc plugs into the modem via a wire or wireless. then the modem connects to the net.

By default it should show the connection . this can be turned off to not show the connection.
make sure you have a firewall installed and on and a viruos protection turned on and up to date.
