If the role was reversed how would you feel? Starting out a new relationship and having doubts isn't good. Just because he talks including ex's doesn't mean he's up to something. And if he looks to see who's calling..and doesn't answer might mean that whoever is calling isn't important enough to answer while he's w/you. That you have his attention while he's w/you. Having said that the old saying goes..nothing ventured...nothing gained. Meaning if you want this to advance further you're just going to have to put yourself out there. Maybe he's a dog..maybe he's a good guy? But you should at least give it a chance until you have proof otherwise. Just hope for the best and expect the worst is all you can do.

You're not being oblivious if you're questioning this behavior-- perhaps cautious of potential red flags. Since this is a new relationship, you're going to have to give it time to determine whether this is a platonic " norm " for him OR he likes to have " buffers ". Next time he does that with the cell phone, simply ask him why he isn't answering. If he gets defensive, there's your first red flag.
Good luck--- this doesn't sound like it's going to be easy.

I don't know.... you have doubts, that's why we're here... Your best bet is to ASK him. (I'm friends with my exes.... They were nice guys when we were together; they're nice guys now...) that may be all that it is.... How do you know he has a lot of female contacts? Does he talk openly about his friendships? Or is he quasi-secretive...? (Appears to be shielding the information, but you get the point?) IF he's trying to leave the impression that he's a lady's man, he's a jerk. (Attempts to make me jealous piss me off...)
Seems to me he should shut his phone OFF when you're together.
At least the ringer; let it go to message... Good luck. Hope it works out.

Maybe you should watch closely to these bad characteristics and see if they go further. It's a new relationship, so it may just be minor doubts that he has. Once you're both settled in and feel comftorable, he'll see you're the only girl for him!

The fact that you are even asking means that you have doubt.....trust that intuition, it's nagging you for a reason. I wouldn't even venture down that path, save yourself the hurt that is most likely to come.

You should be careful. It sounds suspicious and in my opinion, where theres smoke, theres usually fire. So, if your instincts are telling you somethings not right, pay attention. Don't trust him completely. Keep your guard up until you know for sure what he's all about.

Get into it if you think you trust him.
Best bet is to ask him. Get out of it if he's a bit shady.
