I Know all the old standbys (milk, tea, counting, mentally writing out stressors, bath, music, reading) but none seem to work. I have a hard time falling asleep, or even getting comfortable and relaxed for sleep (without tiring myself out by staying up)
Does anyone have any new/unheard of ideas?

Three things:
1) Being more physically active during the day. Most people cannot sleep because their mind is still working. If you are physically tired, your mind stops making such an effort to keep pestering you about things you did during the day and just wants rest. Try to do some yard work, clean the house, walk the dog, dance, workout, etc.
2) White noise. Most people fall asleep to what is known as "white noise". This is noise that doesn't have any intellectual connotation, such as the air whistling through a heating or air vent, a ceiling fan, radio static, rain, etc.
3) Half a glass of wine. Alcohol is a depressant, which makes your mind slow down. Wine is healthy when taken in moderation. Do not drink yourself to sleep. Simply have a half a glass of wine with dinner. Not advisable for every evening. Please drink responsibly.

Oh, honey, I know exactly how you feel!
Things that work for me -
1] a warm bath
2] herbal tea [ I like Bigelow's Sweet Dreams ]
3] no caffeine or alcohol AT ALL
4] do a really hard Sudoku or crossword in the tub
5] 'daydream' -
a] plan and decorate a house in your head
b] make a list of all the things to buy people when you win a million dollars
c] make a list of things to throw away or replace
d] list problems on a blackboard in your head, and erase them all!
e] count turtles - they jump so slowly, you will fall asleep from boredom
PS: be very careful not to drive when you haven't slept - the least I can drive on is 4 hours of sleep - but everyone is different [ also, don't balance your checkbook! ]
PPS: don't you love answers from people who have no idea of chronic insomnia!?

I was in the same boat, trouble is I do a lot of driving as part of my job. I had to get sleep because I was making mistakes and could be endangering myself as well as others. I went to my doctor and got a prescription for Ambien. I only take a half a pill at night, but it's enough to make my brain shut up, let me relax enough to get a full night's sleep.

Other things, no caffiene drinks or chocolate 4 hours before bedtime. Limit the amount of cheese you eat during dinner, cheese and fish are brain fuel.

Have you tried taking anything? If you are having trouble sleeping all of the time, then you should really consider seeing your Dr. Perhaps you'd be a candidate for a short term medication that helps you get to sleep. But if you're more into trying some alternative methods here are a couple of links:

Have you tried adding white noise in the background?

I find it helps A LOT to have a fan running or a nature CD playing while I go to sleep (rain, birds, ocean sounds, etc.). White noise is incredibly relaxing and soothing and helps calm your mind down while you drift off.

Chamomile tea or catnip tea. They have some bath gels and body washes that have chomomile in them. Take a nice hot bath with the body wash and then drink a hot cup of chamomile tea. Hope it works for you. Sex usually works for me.

I use to take a prescription medicine called amptriptyline. It made me fall asleep in about 10 minutes and it didn't give me a hung over feeling in the morning.
