The birth control pill uses hormones to basically convince your body that it is already pregnant- so you do not ovulate, because you don't ovulate when you are pregnant. The monthly period is caused when the hormone supression is removed, and withdrawl bleeding occurs because from a hormonal point of view you body thinks you delivered or miscarried. Before the normal hormone cycle can be set in motion again, you are already taking the first pills of the new pack. Missing one pill during the month slightly increases the chance you will ovulate that month, but it is only very slight for the majority of women. Even your own body doesn't produce hormones on a schedule that tight, and it's pretty tolerant of the varied 24 hour time frame for the dosage. You can't get pregnant during the withdrawl bleeding time because you never ovulated, and if you start the new pack on time, you still won't.

It really isn't the pill at that point that is keeping you from getting pregnant. It is your cycle that is the prevention. AND, that doesn't always work. The pills (while taking them) throws hormones into your body, making it think that it is not time to ovulate. This throws mix signals to the reproductive system and makes the egg a dud in a way. The pill does this until you reach the end of your ovulation week and a little past. During your Menstruation week your body doesn't need the hormone to fight off the reproductive mode so you take the sugar pills. If you miss a pill or become irregular taking them then your body will go back into reproductive mode. This is the easiest way I could possibly word it. It's not scientific terminology but it's the best I could do.

Taking the pill regularly regulates your menstrual cycle. If you don't take it correctly, there's a chance you could ovulate, i.e. release an egg. If you have unprotected sex, you could get pregnant. Assuming you've been taking it consistently and correctly, when you get to those placebo pills, your body has already skipped ovulation and you have your period (you're shedding the lining of your uterus).

Under normal circumstances, YES, you CAN get pregnant during your period. But if you are taking the pill correctly, your cycle should be regulated so that you will not be ovulating during that week.

The major reason that you don't get pregnant during the week of placebo (sugar) pills on the Oral Contraceptive (combined) Pill is that the lack of hormones produces an oestrogen withdrawal bleed ... mimicking a normal menstual period. The time of ovulation (hopefully suppressed by the hormone pills) has been and gone - usually 2 weeks prior.

You dont ovulate at all when you are on oral contraceptives. When you have a "period"once you stop taking the active pills its a "pill period"which is simulated by the pill. You are at risk more on placebos because you have the possibility of an ovulation.

Because you are on your period then, so you are not ovulating and there is not an egg to fertilize.
