Pre-Watergate, his cabinet formed the original dream team and his foreign policy accomplished what his predecessors could only dream of.

He was a great statesman taken down by those who were not even worthy of waxing his shoes over something that amounted to nothing of consequence.

Polk. Besides being a very wise man at a difficult time in US History, he also added more territory to the US than any other President (including Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase). And, he had the sense to leave office after only one term. He's in my top ten.

I'm not alone! In a Wikipedia article on Polk, you'll find that " scholars have ranked him 8th to 12th on the list of greatest presidents for his ability to set an agenda and achieve all of it."
