If you're an Antarctic explorer, no. If you're an ordinary camper, golfer, or commuter then they're amazing soft and luxurious feeling, they keep you warm when it's cold without feeling heavy and hot when you get where it's warm, and they're surprizingly durable. Tops and bottoms together pack down to about the volume of a quart of jar. Besides that, the black ones are a lot sexier than the JC Penny's beige waffle weave. my mom swears by them. but I didn't care for them. I find that cotton is more breathable and is better at wicking away mositure than silk. SmartWool also makes some great merino wool ones in different weights. I love their socks, so their long under must be great.
