The number of electors for each state is the combination of the number of U.S. Representatives for each state (which differs from state to state) and the number of U.S. Senators for each states (which is two). Since Texas has 32 Representatives, it has 34 electors. The only state with more electors is California which has 55 electors. The next largest is New York. The smallest are D.C. (which by virtue of a Constitutional Amendment gets three) and Vermont, Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Alaska (which also have three as they each have only one representative).

Each state gets one elector for each Senator and one for each member of the House of Representatives for that state. The number of representatives is based upon the voting population for the state. http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/electors.html

Texas has 34, but California has a whopping 55. (This is based on 2004-2006 elections)
