Not at all! It's not like you want to use some bizarre, completely made-up character name or something. Hermione is a classic mythological name whose history goes back far beyond its usage in Harry Potter (assuming that's why some would think it an odd choice).
I, for one, hold that using a classic name you happen to love could never be considered cruel! ;) She'll appreciate that you loved her enough to use something so unexpected and interesting. And even if she goes through a phase where she wishes she had something more common, like Rose or Grace, it still couldn't be considered a mean or poorly-thought-out choice ... especially as a middle name. If she doesn't care for it for whatever reason, she can just be Lauren. Just like little Lauren Marie might prefer not to share her middle name with others. It has nothing to do with it being a "bad" choice, know what I mean?
For what it's worth, other names from Greek mythology are becoming quite popular -- or at the very least, familiar. Ariadne/Ariana, Cassandra, Chloe, Daphne, Helene, Iris, Penelope, Phoebe, etc.
In other words, if you'd love to name your daughter that, by all means do so! It's a great name. ;)

The name Hermione was around long before Harry Potter. That name dates all the way back to Greek Mythology. The name is also in one of my favorite plays of all times "The Winter's Tale" by William Shakespeare. Since the Harry Potter book series, people have become more accepting of the name, and they can pronounce it for the most part as well.
The meaning of the name Hermione is travel, so it's not something offensive or too outrageous in my opinion. And the meaning of Lauren was originally Man from Laurentum (even though it's a girls name) so I think Lauren fits with Hermione nicely.

I don't mind it as a middle name. It's not just a Harry Potter name, it's a classic Greek mythology name. Hermione is Helen of Troy's daughter.
It's way better than Marie or Jane or Rose, as far as middle names go. It flows with Lauren very nicely too.

It is a name that is used in England. Obviously even there it has taken on a whole new status but, at least in England there are other people with that name and it has other contexts and conotations. I think it is difficult whenever you name someone after a public person or figure. You never know where that image will end up. Who knows how history will see Harry Potter and what will become of it over the years as your child grows up. Then again, it's just her middle name and she can hide from it pretty easily if she chooses to. I personally would not do it. You might want to do some research on the name in England and see what people are saying.

No ... I loved the name Hermione a long time before Harry Potter and think it's a lovely name on its own ... the only real problem I can forsee is unwanted association with the aforementioned franchise.
No matter, though, because the middle name is rarely used ... most of her peers will never know her middle name unless she chooses to tell them, so there's no real worry there. I also think it's quite thoughtful to pair an odd middle name with a common first name ... that way if the child thinks their name is boring they have the option of going by their middle name; it can work the other way round too (odd first name common middle name)

I think it's perfectly fine, as long as you stick with a normal first name. Hermione was around as a name long before Harry Potter anyway.
