A book about a black man who lived his whole life, known as a white male, and everyone thought he was white until his death and they discovered that he was really a black man.

Are you sure it's not the other way around? There's a terrific book (non-fiction) called, "Black Like Me," that's about a white man who takes some pills that systemically darken his skin. He tries to live his life as he's known it, but now personally experiences all the discrimination that blacks receive.

I think it was written in the late '60s, and was very famous.

I don't remember a book but I do remember a documentary about a black musician who lived like that. He was a famous blues man and everyone thought he was white! Recessive genes I think!

Yep, sounds like The Human Stain by Philip Roth (made into a movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman).

It kind of sounds like Imitation of Life where a black girl lives her whole life as a white girl, disowning her mother until the day she died.
