when you fill out a job application, there is a section to write down previous employment. if i was terminated from a job after giving my 2 weeks notice, can a potential employer call the previous employer and find out why i was terminated, or even that i was terminated at all? what information does a potential employer get when they call a previous employer?

First, if you gave two weeks notice, and then were terminated, I wouldn't hold it against you. That happens a lot in competitive situations.

Second, most employers are very careful about talking about past employees. They don't usually say bad things, because they are afraid of being sued.

So, we can call your previous employers but we won't usually find out all the juicy details.

Not every potential employer bothers to call your past employers.

So, I think you should be honest, and its unlikely that they'll find out about your termination, and even if they do, you can explain it away.

Legally they can only state that you worked there from such and such a date, what your salary was and if they would rehire you. The last one is really outdated though it has not legally changed as far as I know.
If they did happen to say something derogatory or the conditions by which you left you can sue their butts off, so most HR Depts. say as little as possible fearing a lawsuit.

idk about your state, but in ohio, the previous employer can only say whether you worked there or not. They cannot say how good of a worker you were, or if you quit or were fired.

God bless the slacker law.
