it's not limited to convience stores - it's usually a family owned, operated business that has been in the same neighborhood for many years. I live in Jersey and there are many "mom n pop" pizza restaurants around. in fact they're better than the major chain pizza places!

It means its a old fashion store or shop. These kind of stores are not "corporate" own. rather its owned by the people and the community.
