Besides Shakespeare. Is it Jesus Christ or Elvis Presley... or who is it?

Religion is always the first to be quoted when someone is trying to support or justify their ideas or actions. So it's obvious the most quoted persons will be religious figures.

No doubt it's a close contest between Jesus and Mohammed, especially in the era we're living in now.....Also Buddha and Confucious probably rank pretty high up there too.

Peace.

It is probably Jesus Christ first after that I would rank it:

2. William Shakespeare
3. Mark Twain
4. Benjamin Franklin
5, Abraham Lincoln

I think the Bible in General is probably quoted the most, though I wouldn't limit it to Jesus as he only spoke in 4 books in the New Testament, and people tend to quote largely outside his speeches.

That's an interesting question. You might check a copy of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and see who gets the largest section.

Jesus would certainly be up near the top, if not the top, probably even above Shakespeare.

It might be Chairman Mao Tse-Tung; an estimated 800,000,000 copies of his quotations were sold/distributed. And people in China at the time were expected to read it and study it etc. I don't know how often he was actually quoted though.

I would think that it must be a religious figure. If you count the number of people who have died and are sick, people must evoke a deity. I would expect that to be Jesus if you consider all sects of Christianity.
