Most robotic projects need a computer controller and a way to program it. Lego's Mindstorm kits ($200) are a great introduction. Very easy to use, program and learn. For more advanced systems, get into PLC's (programmable logic controllers) which can be purchased for as little as $35.00 (CUBLOC) or as much as thousands of dollars for very sophisticated systems (AllenBradley). Parallax Inc. sells a kit for $79 using the basic stamp microcontroller that used to be sold thru Radio Shack and is a great learning kit. I bought one, used it then passed it on to my neiphew so he could learn it. It includes a servo and has a servo controller built in. It also comes with the instructions and software to program it. So does the lego Mindstorms Kit as well (it comes with multiple servo's and switches and sensors...motors and wheels and everything you will need).

the cheap and easy way is to use a PIC Axe chip. see
www.picaxe.co.uk
the chips are available in the US through robotics hobby shops (like mine, sorry for the shameless plug).
The PIC Axe has a 'servo' comand, making it easy to interface to an RC car.
you would need some kind of sensor to serve the goal of the robot. then the programming of the PIC Axe (in a form of Basic) would monitor the input from the sensor and control the speed and steering using the servo output command.
not that tough of a project at all.
