There is nothing affordable in SF. Seriously, I used to live in the Bay Area and I moved because it was too expensive and there was no quality of life. Try for student housing, that is your best bet for any type of affordable housing.

The only way I know students can afford San Francisco is if a bunch of them rent a house together. Then the rent is affordable but the space is probably going to be crowded. I'd check craigslist for a room for rent. Also your school's housing office will probably have rental listings.
I'd also look at work for rent opportunities. Someone I know lived in a room in a beautiful house because a (rich) elderly woman lived there and needed someone to take care of her dogs. My friend got free rent.
A couple I know couldn't afford a house in San Francisco, so they bought in Oakland. The whole bay area is expensive but there might be deals in areas just outside San Francisco.

first of all san francisco is expensive to start with, plus the safer it is , means the nicer it is and the price gets even higher........good luck, your best bet would be to try to rent a room, in a good location

... and I am looking for world peace and the winning lottery numbers..
Sorry to tell you but in SF the words safe and affordable housing costs are mutually exclusive. You want affordable you fight for parking spaces, deal with noisy neighbors and lock your doors and bar you windows all the time. YOu want safe, then triple your best guess.
Welcome to the West Coast...
