M D C C L V I

M= 1000 but larger numbers were indicated by putting a horizontal line over them, which meant to multiply the number by 1,000. So the M has a line over the top, which means 1,000 times 1,000.

D= 500
C= 100
L= 50
V= 5
I= 1
