My first rarely responded to noise outside the womb, I did put music on my belly, he would kick at that, I kept the volume just above audible, sound travels fast over fluid, so although it has to travel through alot of bodily tissues, it is still loud enough for your baby to hear when the headphones are directly on your belly. With my second, he jumps at every little noise, the dog barking, a car horn, a door shutting, even the sound of my cracking my knuckles!

That link is very informative on how baby hears, what just how loud is too loud.

My mother always said run things as normal. Vacuum things like that, so when baby is born those sort of sounds don't bother him while he's sleeping or awake, they will be normal sounds for him.
