boot into thte bios using f1, f2, or delete key and check and see fi the drive is seen in the bios it will be in the primary master location.

1. if it is seen:
take your xp cd and boot to it then choose repair on the first menu and it will go to a prompt and tell you to choose which windows to log into, type 1 and then type in your administrator password (leave blank if you never made one) and . then it will bring you to c:\windows> type in chkdsk/p this will run the check disk utility adn check and repair system files. then reboot.

if it still does the same thing then boot back to the cd and instead of reapair on the first menu choose install windows. hit f8 for the eula and on the second menu choose repair then it will act like it's going through the windows install (will take 45 minutes) and it will actually be upgrading itself and everything you had on there will still be there.

2. if it is not seen:
Reseat teh ide cable on both ends that hooks to your hard drive, if it is still not seen switch the end of the cable that hooks to your hard drive with the same end of the cable that hooks to your cd-rom and see if it sees it. if it is still not seen and teh cd-rom shows up both times then the hard drive itself is dead and teh data on it is lost unless you take it to a recovery service which costs $$$$.

Try pressing F8 while the computer is booting. This should take you to a screen offering you some choices of which SAFE MODE is one. Select safe mode using the arrow keys on your keyboard and press enter on the keyboard, and you'll see a bunch of white letters and words on a black screen. After several seconds (awhile) it should boot into windows with everything larger than usual. If you have virus protection and spyware protection, now is the time to run them (in safe mode). If not, see if you can get Avast antivirus (free) from a friend's computer and SpyBot Search and Destroy ( free from
Safer-Networking) and install and run them in safe mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode and you get the same error message, then you probably need a new hard drive. If you have a 30G, it's probably pretty old anyway and they only have a life expectancy of about 3 years. Good Luck.

all the responses above are good, but this happened to me when I was younger, and I freaked out. Turned out there was a floppy disk in the drive causing it to lock up and try to boot from the floppy. Took the floppy out and it started up perfect. always start with the smallest problem.

Sounds like viruses. You can reboot your computer with restore CD's to get the factory settings. It will delete all your files and stuff. If you do not have the restore discs, you will have to buy an upgrade.

maybe it had a serious case of the viruses that evedently crashed windows, buy windows and stay off those nasty virusy sites. get some virus protection.
