Not necessarily...unless I'm in a situation where I feel the need or desire to.. Or? if someone smiles at me, I'll surely smile back. I make limited eye contact when I'm out trying to get errands done, tending to focus on the goal at hand. It also depends on what type of setting I'm in..if I want to interact with the individuals I come across. I don't live in the most ideal type of neighborhood. The fact that you give out "free smiles" is lovely though, I wish I thought more like you do.

Living in a large city, with lost of weirdo's and creeps, it's hard to delegate free smiles to everyone.
I try and smile at people passing me by, but the unfortunate truth is that if you smile at a stranger on the train or bus, they may be creepy and then you're involved in some conversation about their sisters cats for the duration of your ride.

When they are my friends I always pass them by with a smile, almost as if saying hello with out any words or hand movement. If it is a person I dont know well, but our eyes meet, I usually smile if they smile at me. Other than that, I walk around with a blank expression

Yes...I grew up in the day when we were taught to be friendly like that. I am offended when people dont smile when they walk past me...it make the world a friendlier place when we "acknowlege" each other with a simple smile!

Yes, I do. I smile at everyone who makes eye contact with me. Not only do I enjoy it but I think it's just a thoughtful gesture.
A simple smile just COULD make someone feel better.

Always! And I say how ya doing, good morning, afternoon, etc.
Don't always get a response though. In San Antonio, a lot of people who don't speak English would rather ignore you than risk being drawn into a conversation.
