During the year the orbit is closer to the sun at times (next time is around January 2, 2008) and sometimes farther away, because the orbit is slightly elliptical.

We are slightly, and I do mean slightly, closer to the sun in the winter. The earth's orbit is elliptical by a small amount but not really enough to affect anything. What gives us the seasons is the earths 23.5 degree tilt on its axis. This is why the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer are 23.5 degrees from the equator and the Arctic and Antarctic circles are 23.5 degrees from the poles. Capricorn and Cancer are the northernmost and southernmost extents of the sun and the Arctic and Antarctic circles represent the southernmost and northernmost extents of no sunrises for the winter periods.

Yes it does. When it is closer, it is called Perihelion. When it is further away, it is called Aphelion.
