I am trying to set up a fundraiser with a theatre where they show performances and movies--I want to do a movie screening--but wanted to make sure I contact the right person to talk to. Is the director of development the person I should be talking to or should I go straight to the President?

First of all, a Director of Development is charged with fundraising and obtaining grants. One of the answerers stated the position is also responsible for increasing audience size, but that depends on the organization [some companies have a separate person for that, or the Director of Education does it].

But I'm confused by your question. What is it you want to do? If you're just wanting to have the event at the theatre, you would contact the resident production manager or facilities manager or the executive director of the theatre group that owns or manages the theatre. But if you're wanting help with promoting the event, the resident company's director of development will probably do that only if the company stands to make some money from the event.

Each organization is structured differently.
As for Director of Development, I am familiar with that person in the conyrcy of procuring donations/financing for his/her organization.
