how much oil does the motor hold and wear is the filter at.

Wear do I drain the tranny and what kind and how much fluid does it take.

The dealer hear sucks. they want 300 buck for a tune up.

so if anybody out there can help it would be great.
Thanks

it isnt just a change of oil's that the dealers do, they also inspect the bike from top to bottom, verifies that all critical fasteners (for starters) is at proper torque values, and everything is within specs. they also want to make sure that the new 6 speed tranny's are performing the way they should.
in the 2006 dyna's, the baker 6 speed appeared. so this transmission is only 2 years old. if there's gonna be a problem with a new transmission, it'll be early in the production run especially.

if u want to save 300 bucks, get a service manual for the bike. it'll tell u exactly how much oil it takes and how to change them. they're pretty simple to change.

i suggest for a tool list u get a set of allen wrenches, both standard and metric sockets, torqx wrenches, a torque wrench that measures both foot pound and newton meters, some loc-tite (both red and blue type), and a bike lift.
u'll eventually need to do the brakes, so to make it easier to refill the master cylinder without having to bleed the brakes, there's a tool that forces fluid up the brake line and to the master cylinder thru the bleeder nipple.

the service manual will tell u in detail how to do a certain job, whether it's brakes, or how to tear down and do a top or bottom end rebuild, including what tools are needed and what the specs are.

The engine should hold about 3 1/2 quarts.
The trans takes "approximately"(Harley's words) 1 quart.
The primary takes "approximately" 1 quart.

The 300 bucks is for the 1000 mile service. I suggest you let the dealer do it. They check a few other things at the same time. It's also your opportunity to have whatever little things that need taking care of fixed (free of charge-warranty). While you are there for the service, shell out a few more for a service manual. It will detail all the procedures and list all the tools needed for each. It's about 50 bucks.

Be careful if you do your own maintenance. You will need to keep every single reciept on file. You don't want to void your warranty over a little thing. You don't mention the primary case, it's due for a change as well. Not doing that will void your warranty.

I do my own on my '06 Dyna. I went a little extra and got the parts book and the electrical diagnostic manual too.

$300 sounds a bit pricey for routine service. Even from an HD dealer. Are you sure it's not for the break in service? If so, you have to let the dealer do it so there won't be any problems with the factory warranty. If not, spend $50 for a service manual.

Like Cycle said but as far as the ride and look I'll take my FLSTS Heritage (99) over a Road King or any FX bike cause I like the softail ride and those springs, not to mention the "hardtail look", ya know they were "The Ride" on everything till hydraulics( introduced in 1948) came along as a cheaper way of shock absorbtion. In fact when I was younger I had a Shwinn with a springer front end

the softails hold 3.5 quarts of oil. the tranny can use the h-d synthetic 20-50 oil. it's expensive, but synth is the way to go. the 6 speed is not a baker 6 speed. in fact 6th gear is not an overdrive gear. anyway, i usually change my tranny oil and primary case oil ( again h-d 20-50 synth oil) at every other oil change.

find a new dealer.
make sure doing your own servicing won't void the warranty.
