I know this is a really dumb question, but my mind's gone blank. What is that stuff that farmers put on their crops to kill bugs and all that junk? It starts with a 'P'.

Pesticide.

No, not a dumb question. Every one gets mind blanks at times. Just wait until you're a grandma like me, LOL.

Have a great night.

Yes, pesticide is the correct answer. What pesticide you use, how much you use, what are you trying to control and what alternatives are there?, are other questions to think about also. What you put on your garden can be absorbed by the roots of what you are growing. There are ways to grow a garden without using the "Total Nuke" method of pesticides.
A few ways to do this, which do take more time, are:

1. Crop Rotation. Don't grow the same crop in the same place within three years.

2. Check in the morning and at dusk for pests on your plants. Be sure to check on the underside of the leaves for eggs. Hand remove what you find. A jar of water mixed with Ivory soap to place them in.

3. Use Ivory soap (non detergent) and mix with water as a spray to kill soft body pests.

4. (Hope I spell this right) Prithium or Pyrithium. Something like that, is a good pesticide to use if you need one. Sevin is another mild one that breaks down pretty quick.

5. Keep a log of what you grow from year to year and note what type and when pests start to appear. That way you can take steps to prevent them in the next year.
Good luck.
