I live in Buffalo NY where we get all 4 seasons especially winter. I have a fire in my fire place just about once a week.

I used to have mine cleaned every other year. Take a mirror and hold it in the fireplace (fire out please) and look up the chimney in the daylight. You should see a nice square hole all the way up to the top. If you see buildup of creosote, you are already late. Get it done asap.

Good luck!

Hi,

According to several commercial site I found, the average chimney should be cleaned every 2-3 years. Additionally, it should be inspected and repaired every year.

The National Fire Protection Association explains that 59% of confined chimney and chimney connector fires are a result of a failure to clean the chimney.

clean it in the springtime and you might even think of attaching wire brissel wheel to an electric drill and clean it to the original white bricks, then hang a plant growing light inside and put indoor plants in it to grow and add a wild onion to drive the spiders crazy

Probably once a year will be fine for you. You might should go ahead and get it checked before the real cold sets in.
