Read over this article for a discussion of some of the successes that Kofi Annan has discussed.

Defeats vary and are more difficult because you have to define defeat. For example, has the UN failed by not sanctioning Iran over their enriching uranium? Is it a failure when China and Russia, 2 of the 5 countries in the UN with veto power, refuse to support it?

Is that a failure because the USA didn't get what it wanted or is that a success because the UN was working democratically and the way it was designed?

The United Nations is only successful on educational, cultural and scientific cooperation of the member countries but it is disregarded when it comes to development and use of nuclear weapons.
