Consider the meaning of subtraction -- it is nothing but the inverse of addition. What a-b means is "the unique number c such that c+b = a". Now, you (should) know that for any number b, b+(-b) = 0 (this is in fact what the symbol -b means). So suppose that c = a+(-b) -- then c+b = a+(-b)+b = a+0 = a. Thus c is a number such that c+b = a, which means that c = a-b by definition.

You may be interested to know that in more formal contexts, subtraction is actually defined to be addition of the additive inverse, so a-b = a+(-b) by definition.

for example:

3+x=15

first, you must get x by itself on one side
so, since 3 is a positive number, you must do it's opposite to have zero so that x is by itself. Now, remember that what you do to one side, you must do to the other (that means on each side of the equal sign), so since you subtracted 3 from 3, you must subtract 3 from 15 to get your answer.

3+x= 15
-3 -3
________
x = 12

do you understand? by the way, the three is supposed to be under 15 lol
