the cost of living would increase and the poor on fixed incomes would be hit the hardest. walmart's largest effect on an economy has been the lowering of the cost of living. if you are old enough to remember the corner grocer, then you should remember the prices and the limited selection was a major problem. bread and milk was delivered every 7 to 10 days, walmart get them daily or every two days in slow stores. the keep prices down by large turnover of stock. what a walmart does in sales in one week would beat most mom and pop places for a year.

Other discount retailers would fill the void within a year, probably sooner, taking over their stores, suppliers, and employees. Unemployment would temporally increase less than 1%, and most employees would get unemployment benefits, and I hope there are not many who are actually living on their walmart salary. GDP would fall by much less because walmart customers will still buy somewhere. The advantage of capitalism is that it is very flexible . so no company is indispensible.

There would probably be mass hysteria in my town, but I wouldn't mind a bit. I really don't like them much. The economy would probably take a huge dive since they employ half the country(at low wages)
