Yes Joe, firefighters do have basic knowledge of chemistry.
That is part of the training and continuing education to be certified.
It is important to understand the things involved in emergencies.

However, you can't know everything so we carried a few books on the fire engine.

yes it would be good. many fire academies teach a basic level of chemistry and physics (relating to fire) also the higher your knowledge the better off you are to get jobs like inspector or detective.

It never hurts to know some chemistry. You can also take up spelling.
