How do you do an equation like 6 2/3 - 2 1/4

or 15 3/4 - 8 4/9

You have to change it to improper fractions. so for the first one, it'd be

20/3 - 9/4

and then you have to make them have the same denominator

80/12 - 27/12 = 53/12

you must change all the denominators to the same ..

e.g: 6 and 2/3 = 20/3

2 and 1/4 = 9/4

since 4x3 = 12

you need to convert them all to 12ths

so 3 into 12 goes 4 times .. therefore 4 times 20 = 80 so the first one is 80/12

can you see that? look at it slowly it will become clear

now 9/4 .. 4 goes into 12 3 times so, 3 x 9 = 27 which means the second one is

27/12

now you subtract 27 from 80 and the answer is 53/12

convert that to whole and parts ... 53 divided by 12 equals 4 and 5/12 left over

now try the second equation using the same principles

I don't see a riddle. I see subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators.You change each fraction to an equivalent fraction with a common denominator.
3 and 4 changes to 12
2/3 = 8/12
1/4 = 3/12
Subtract = 5/12 Don't forget the whole numbers.
6 - 2 = 4
answer........4 5/12
Now the common denominator for 4 and 9 is 36. You try it.....
