We keep gasoline stabilizer in our gasoline year around. Even if you let the motor run out of gasoline, there will always be a little in there. Each time we get the gas can filled we add some to it, that way we never need to worry about it. Changing the oil and spark plug is also a good idea as well as making sure the air filter is clean by blowing it off or replacing it.

Changing the oil is a must.
Always drain the gas before storing of the lawn mower.Old gas can be bad.
Spark plugs are cheap and a new one never hurts, maybe 4 bucks.[if not factory gapped make sure the plug is properly gapped to manufacturers specifications]
Always make sure the air filter is not clogged before first spring use.
Tighten all screw, nuts and bolts twice a year minimum, especially the engine mount bolts.
I like to use rustcheck,or an equvilant, to spray all moving parts except a belt drive if it is self propelled.
Always lube a throttle cable or engine stop cable frequently as these are not places to ignore.A thin oil is recomended.

You can buy an additive at a local hardware store or Wallmart that keeps your gas from goping bad. This way all you have to do is mix it in the gas crun it for a few miinutes...shut it off and crank up next summer.
