The Vietnam war started during WWII. As soon as the war ended a civil war erupted. It really did not end until Saigon fell in 1975.
The French pulled out after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The US got involved shortly thereafter. US involvement escalated in the mid 60's. We lost about 50,000 of our young men over there, and Vietnam lost millions of their citizens. I think most people are glad the fighting over there ended.

Vietnam had several wars involving different occupying countries, including France and Japan, and behind the scenes wrangling by Russia, China and the USA.
The first American military loss in Vietnam happened in 1945, with the killing of an OSS officer. The first contingent of non-combat Americans was sent to Vietnam during the Korean War, in 1950. In 1959, two American 'advisors' were killed in Vietnam.
It was 1961 when the first Special Forces troops were deployed to Vietnam, to train the South Vietnamese in combat methods.
The period from 1963 to 1975 is considered the American participation in the Vietnam War, following an incident in the Gulf of Tonkin.
About 1,800 Americans are listed as Missing in Action or Prisoners of War in Vietnam. Some have been seen in other Indochina nations, and some in Russia. For them, the war continues.
Actually, it continues for all Americans until those men are returned to American soil. None of us are free until we are ALL free.

In February 1965, the Vietcong attacked American air bases and killed American soldiers. President Johnson declared war against North Vietnam the following month. The war supposedly ended in 1975. That's why a lot of people refer to the war as "the 10-year war".

America and Japan occupied Viet-nam going back to 1945.
The first American casualty was Sept 26 1946. The United States signed a peace treaty with the Country of France. The colonies within Viet-Nam were French controlled until they were no longer capable of providing defense for their citizens. France called upon the United States and basically reminded the USA that there was a peace treaty that we should abide by. After the assassination of John F Kennedy the biggest mistake in American History was Lyndon B Johnson. A Man of lies and deception. He formerely announced to the American Public that we would not send our troops ten thousand miles away to fight the war of France. Three Months later the first Division of the United States Marine Corps were deployed into Viet-Nam. This was the first step towards a war that would never be won. By 1969 the soldiers of Viet-Nam had lost over fifty percent of their strong hold against the Vietnamese. They retaliated by the killing of innocent civilians. I will say no more...........

March of 1965 the first American troups was sent in and they did not all come home until 10 years later. After 56,000 men died fighting in Vietnam. From the USA.
14,000 nurses were over there also that some people forget.
It is similar to california as a coastal country and the Navy ships could go from one end to the other of the country.
