These questions are not very difficult; here is one way of solving it:

We were told a total of 42 people, so:

Let x = number of children; thus, (42 - x) = number of adults;

So the total value of child's tickets would be 12 x number of children; total value of adult tickets would be 16 x number of adults.

We know the total spent was 568$ so we can make the equation:

12x + 16(42-x) = 568

12x + 672 - 16x = 568 (combining like terms)

-4x + 672 = 568 (Add 4 x to each side)

672 = 568 + 4x

104 = 4x

x = 26 so, 26 children and (42-26) or16 adults.

Check your answer (26 x 12) + (16 x 16) = 568

let x = the number of adults
let 42-x = the number of children

16x + 12(42-x) = 568

16x + 504 - 12x = 568

504 + 4x = 568

4x = 64

x = 16

therefore there was 16 adults and 26 children.

x=amt paid by adults
y=amt paid by children
x+y=42
x(16) + y(12)=568

x=42-y

(42-y)(16)+12y=568
672-16y+12y=568 subtract 672 from both sides and combine terms
-4y=-104
y=26
x=42-26
x=16
answer: 16 adults and 26 children

make it into an equation, make adults x and children why and make it equal to 568 and then do x+y= 42 and then graph it. so make 2 equations and plug them into ur ti-83 graph.

x = # of adults
z = # of kids
y = total spent
x + z = 42............ 42 - x = z

y = 16x + 12z
568 = 16x + 12z
142 = 4x + 3z ..................... (you don't really have to do this step i just did it to make it look simpler)
142 = 4x + 3(42 - x)
142 = 4x + 126 - 3x
142 = x + 126
16 = x...............There were 16 adults and

42-x = z
42-16 = z
26 = z................There were 26 kids
